Who Was Sir Murray Halberg?

Murray was born on the 7th of July 1933, in Eketahuna. He later moved to Auckland where he graduated and attended Avondale College. There he also participated in rugby matches and during one of his matches he suffered a severe left arm injury due to which he stopped playing rugby. But this did not stop Murray from sports, the next year he looked up to racing, and there began his career as he was coached by Arthur Lydiard in 1951. Hurray initiated his career by taking part in various competitions and he also went to the first national title at the senior level and won that match as well. It took him three years to participate in and also win the running matches.

Until now it was revealed that Murray passed away while he was at his house on Waiheke Island on the 30th of November 2022. Other than that it was revealed that he passed away on Wednesday aged 89. The cause of the death has not been revealed until now. Dick Tayler, who won the 1974 Commonwealth Games from Christchurch said that he grew up watching Murray and his matches. Tayler describes that Murray was his idol and he grew up watching Murray’s matches when he met him in person, Tayler adds that Murray was kind, respectful, and someone who is an inspiration, and with very good wit. Tayler added that Murray was a funny and astute guy.

Murray also won the first Empire Games gold medal in Cardiff with 13 min 15 seconds over three miles of the run and four years later he also took the gold medal from the same gold medal competition. He participated in the Olympic gold medal and took a 500 m race. This was back in 1960 and Murray held on for a sprint in line for four times of laps out and won the Olympic gold medal. He also was in the world records after he broke the world record of two miles and 4*1 mile relay and three miles in 19 days in 1961. In 1964 he also took part in the Olympic Games where he failed to win but he ran for a solid seventh over 10,000 m in the 5000m. Speaking about his family, much information is not revealed about them, but it was mentioned that he was survived by his wife, Lady Phyllis, and three children namely Greta, Stefan, and Carl. He also has two grandchildren as well. Pete Pfitzinger, Athletic NZ chief executive sent his condolences and said that Murray was someone who was a fierce competitor and ran on the track like a true gentleman. Grant Robertson, Minister of Sport and Recreation said that NZ lost one of the true sporting icons, Murray. He also added that Murray was a legend of athletics from New Zealand and he contributed much to sports
